The South Side of Chicago is expected to see a 19 percent increase in cancer cases over the next five years—more than double the projected nine percent rise in the five surrounding counties. To address decades of persistent health disparities in the community, UChicago Medicine is constructing the city’s first freestanding cancer center, which will combine inpatient and outpatient care with extensive community-focused prevention and education services.
